Clampitt steals DeNise Designs testing victory at Iowa

VIRTUAL NEWTON, IOWA - Carson Poindexter lead a commanding 76 laps at Iowa Speedway on Thursday, but it was Logan Clampitt who claimed the win with a late pass in iSCAR DeNise Designs Series testing.

Clampitt unsurprisingly claimed pole for the event by an impressive two tenths to his nearest competitor Aaron Mulrooney Jr., but the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series playoff hopeful elected to start the race from the rear of the field. This put him behind nearly 20 other competitors on a tough daytime Iowa Speedway.

Cautions were a rarity in the event, making it a difficult task for Clampitt to make up spots. A caution on lap 39 involving Marshall Harris and Mulrooney Jr. gave many drivers their first chance to take one of three sets of tires available for the test race. The second caution on lap 64 saw Jonathon Jones self-spin, setting up for a twenty lap dash to the race finish.

Poindexter was able to hold off hard charging Clampitt until lap 77, when Clampitt scored the event's only lead change and drove off to a race win with a margin of victory of over two seconds.

Second place belonged to Ryan Kendrick after not completing a lap in qualifying and starting in 15th. He made the pass for second place on Poindexter with about ten laps left in the race.

After leading a commanding 76 of 90 laps, Poindexter would fall to third place after suffering from tire fall-off on the final run of the race.

A consistent climb up the leaderboard from 12th saw Joe Burgy work his way into a strong fourth place finish.

Frank DeAngelis backed up a strong fifth place start by going on to finish fifth place in the event.

Other notable finishes include Wednesday night's iSCAR SYMTV Truck Series test winner Colton Zimmer who claimed eighth, eNASCAR Ignite Series star Aaron Mulrooney Jr. who struggled for a 13th place finish and the first car one lap down, Peter Kenny. Kenny started sixth but struggled return to the lead lap after falling one lap behind.
